The sale of\u00a0<\/span>trophies<\/span>\u00a0coming from\u00a0fully protected species<\/span>, though\u00a0prohibited by law<\/span>continues to<\/span>\u00a0grow<\/span>\u00a0throughout<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Gabonese<\/span>\u00a0territory<\/span>\u00a0despite<\/span>\u00a0arrests.<\/span>\u00a0In fact, after<\/span>the recent arrest of<\/span>\u00a0four<\/span>\u00a0panther skins\u00a0traffickers<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0Mitzic,<\/span>\u00a0it is<\/span>\u00a0now<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0Makokou<\/span>, the\u00a0Ogoou\u00e9-<\/span>\u00a0Ivindo province,<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0last<\/span>\u00a0Wednesday<\/span>\u00a0another<\/span>\u00a0trafficker was<\/span>\u00a0caught<\/span>\u00a0in the act of<\/span>\u00a0selling<\/span>\u00a0leopard skin<\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr.<\/span>\u00a0Constant<\/span>\u00a0NGANDA<\/span>\u00a0BAKA<\/span>, a\u00a0Gabonese<\/span>\u00a0citizen,<\/span>\u00a0arrested<\/span>\u00a0by the police<\/span>\u00a0in Makokou<\/span>, admitted\u00a0he shot<\/span>\u00a0the panther<\/span>\u00a0last<\/span>\u00a0August<\/span>\u00a0and was trying to<\/span>\u00a0sell it,<\/span>\u00a0because<\/span>\u00a0it is<\/span>\u00a0customary<\/span>.\u00a0The transaction, which<\/span>\u00a0was to take place<\/span>\u00a0in a motel<\/span>\u00a0room<\/span>\u00a0was prevented<\/span>\u00a0by the police<\/span>\u00a0in Makokou<\/span>, assisted by the\u00a0NGO Conservation<\/span>\u00a0Justice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As noted in the<\/span>\u00a0Forestry Code<\/span>,\u00a0hunting,<\/span>\u00a0taking, possession<\/span>, transportation\u00a0and selling of<\/span>\u00a0fully protected species<\/span>\u00a0is prohibited<\/span>\u00a0and violations<\/span>\u00a0are punishable by<\/span>\u00a03 to 6 months<\/span>\u00a0in prison<\/span>\u00a0with<\/span>\u00a0fines ranging from<\/span>\u00a0100,000<\/span>\u00a0to 10 million<\/span>francs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sentences that<\/span>\u00a0often struggle<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0be applied<\/span>\u00a0and which,<\/span>\u00a0seeping<\/span>\u00a0the amplification<\/span>\u00a0of poaching,<\/span>\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0not<\/span>\u00a0dissuasive.<\/span>Not to mention,<\/span>\u00a0the marginalization of<\/span>\u00a0wildlife\u00a0offense<\/span><\/span>\u00a0by the courts<\/span>\u00a0that do not<\/span>\u00a0often weigh<\/span>\u00a0environmental damage<\/span>arising from<\/span>\u00a0poaching.<\/span>\u00a0A collective<\/span>\u00a0consciousness is not<\/span>\u00a0to be ignored<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>if<\/span> we are to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0protect and<\/span>\u00a0sustain the<\/span>\u00a0Gabonese\u00a0<\/span>environmental heritage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
